What you’ll learn

Build a striking end grain cutting board — roughly 10″ × 15–18″ — from rough hardwood to a food-safe finish. End grain boards are the boards knives love: the blade slips between the wood fibers instead of severing them, so the board self-heals and stays kind to your edge.

You’ll learn:

• Selecting and milling hardwoods like maple, cherry, walnut, and purpleheart
• Designing your own pattern with random widths and contrasting species
• Gluing and flattening an edge-grain panel
• Cross-cutting on a sled and flipping strips to bring the end grain face up
• The final glue-up — dry-fitting, clamping, and keeping it flat
• Sanding through the grits with drum and orbital sanders, easing the edges, and finishing with food-safe mineral oil

Who it’s for

Anyone comfortable around the shop who wants a project that touches real milling, glue-ups, and machine work — and ends with something you’ll use every day. The class is capped at six students.
