Personal Tools: The Essential Utility Tool

Note: This post is part of a series exploring the personal tools I believe every woodworker should have. If you’d like to start from the beginning, check out the introductory post.

Building Your Personal Tool Inventory: A Strong Foundation

As a member of the vibrant woodworking community at The Joinery, you have access to an impressive array of tools. While the shop is well-equipped, having your own personal tools and supplies can greatly enhance your woodworking journey. While personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential, let’s focus on the hand tools and measuring devices that I consider indispensable for any woodworker.

The Utility Tool

In any workshop, a utility tool—such as a Leatherman or a Gerber—proves to be invaluable. Whether you’re extracting a misfired brad nail, smoothing a rough edge, or removing glue from a tight corner, there’s always a task that a utility tool can tackle in a woodshop.

My journey with utility tools began during my years touring with rock and roll bands, where I first started carrying a Leatherman. I was amazed how all I needed to carry was that tool and a roll of tape and I could fix almost anything.  For the past 30 years, I’ve nearly always had one by my side. If I had to choose just one tool, it would undoubtedly be the Leatherman. While some may prefer Gerber tools for their unique features, I’m firmly in the Leatherman camp.

Leatherman offers a variety of models, but I recommend those equipped with pliers, as I find the pliers and knife blade to be the most useful. My current favorite is the Leatherman Free P4, which strikes the perfect balance between price and performance for my needs.

I also prefer the clip design over a leather pouch. It easily attaches to the inside of my pocket, keeping it readily accessible. Plus, I always ensure there’s one in my tool vest pocket for quick access.

While a quality utility tool can come with a higher price tag, proper care can ensure it lasts a lifetime. I believe you’ll find it to be a worthwhile investment in your woodworking toolkit.ears, I’ve nearly always had one by my side.
