Success

I’ve been reading stories today of the lives affected by the bombings in Boston and at the same time looking around our office with all the advanced technology, tools and resources at our disposal. I also think about all that we are blessed with at home and how hard we work to keep up with the trappings we believe are required to live the American Dream and I wonder what type of lives our children will have? What kind of lives do we want them to have and what are we teaching them?

When I was growing up it was easy, we all strove to have the american dream. A big house, nice cars with all the trappings. We were told we were destin to live better then our parents. What they never told us is what we would sacrifice to have all of the American Dream.

As I have gotten older, I am now of the belief that relationships are more important then things. Experiences will last forever, but possessions will come and go. Unfortunatly, I have lived my life in persuit of the dream and forgotten relationships and experiences. My habits are now formed around having the biggest and the best we can afford. My boys both think that a fun night out is going to dinner and buying something from the store. How did we get here? Is that really what I want them to think? How do we change our way of thinking? Most importantly what type of life do we want for our kids? What will success mean to them? What skills do we need to teach them to have this success?

I know this much, something has to change. I want mu boys to value relationships over possessions. I want them to have enough, but above all to be happy. To wake up every day loving who they are, who they are with, and what they do. I want them to have a passion for life, not a desire for things. Now I just have to figure out how to show them the way.

It seems like every day there is another tragedy, lives cut short because of political intolerance, mental illness, disease or just because of bad choices. My heart and prayers go out to all the victoms and families affected by tragedy.

The world is changing, but one thing has always been the same – Life is too short to waste! How do we make the most of it? How will we define success?
