Everyone can be a Rockstar

But are they inspired to be one? That is the job of the leader – to inspire people to make great things happen. One of the best tools that I have found is to discover your “greater why”. People will work extremely hard for a cause they believe in. Most organizations claim that their why is to make a profit and although that is inspirering in a small way, will people really give you their blood, sweat, and tears so that you can make a profit? Your “greater why” is really why you are in business. Why were you inspired to to start your organization? What problem are you trying to solve or how are you hoping to change the world? People what to believe in something and as a leader when you connect those dotes and they believe what you believe, you team will become Rockstars.

I apply this concept not only in my Development Group at work and in the non-profit that I lead, but I also use this in my personal life with staying motivated with the hobbies and fitness. Why do I spend all his time working out? Why have I invested all of this money and space to woodworking tools? Before, I would say to get healthy or because it’s fun. Now I spend time working out so that I can live a long and healthy life for my family. So I can play, help and be there for them when they need me. I do woodworking, so that I can leave a legacy, so that I can leave my mark on the world. These statements keeps me more motivated then to just have fun. I can have fun a lot of different ways, but only through handwork and practice will I be able to leave my mark on the world.

As a leader I see my role as setting a vision and creating a greater why, so that my teams can have something to believe in, something they feel good about putting their time and energy into. The same goes for myself, I need to believe in something. I need a greater why to keep going and putting in the hard work.
