New Dust Collection Process #
We’ve been using our current dust collection system for a while now, and while it has served its purpose, we see opportunities for improvement and simplification for you, our valued users. Given the larger-than-expected amount of sawdust generated, we want to ensure it is put to good use and kept out of landfills. To that end, we will continue to transport the sawdust to a farm just north of Middleton, where it will be repurposed as bedding for dairy cows.
In the past, we’ve encountered issues with trash and other unwanted materials being placed in the dust bins, which complicates disposal for our team. We also understand that changing the dust collector bags has often been a messy and unpleasant experience. With this new process, we aim to resolve these challenges.
Key Features of the New System #
At the core of our new dust collection system are disposable bags that can be easily removed, sealed, and deposited in the designated collection area—eliminating the need for messy dumping.
The Process #
Here’s how the new process works:
1.Monitor the Dust Collector: When the dust collector bag is approximately 2/3 full or if an alarm sounds, it’s time to take action.
2.Stop the Machine: Ensure the machine is turned off before proceeding.
3.Clean the Filter: If the pleated filter does not clean automatically, use the filter whipper to remove any dust buildup.
4.Remove the Full Bag: Carefully take the full bag from the machine, ensuring the keeper is removed.
5.Seal the Bag: Use the provided twist ties to securely close and seal the top of the bag.
6.Dispose of the Bag: Place the sealed bag in the designated collection area (currently, the enclosed trailer on the dock).
7.Get a New Bag: Retrieve a new bag from the central tool area.
8.Install the New Bag: Install the new bag on the dust collector.
9.You’re Done!
Periodic Collection #
On a regular basis, we will transport the filled bags to the farm, where the sawdust will be emptied into bedding bins, and the empty bags will be returned to the shop. Please remember that any sawdust cleaned up from the shop floor, tools, or shop vacuums should be disposed of in the trash or trash dumpster.
By making this process simpler and cleaner, we hope to encourage greater compliance in keeping the dust collectors clean and ready for use. Thank you for your cooperation as we implement these improvements!
