Finishing Policy #

1. Finishing Certification #

• All members must complete a Finishing Certification before using the finishing space. This certification ensures that you understand the proper techniques and safety protocols.  To complete the certification, watch the video below and then take this quiz by clicking here.

2. Spray Finishes #

• No spray finishes are allowed inside the facility. If you must apply spray finishes, this must be done outside on a ground cover.

• Overspray: Precautions must be taken to avoid overspray and protections put into place. Any accidental overspray must be cleaned up immediately to maintain a safe and clean environment.

3. Wipe or Brush-On Finishes #

• Wipe or brush-on finishes may be applied in the designated finishing area cubicles.

• Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation system is turned on during application to maintain air quality. #

4. Disposal of Materials #

• All oily rags, brushes, and other finishing materials must be removed from The Joinery after use.

• Take Home: Bring a plastic bag to transport these items home for proper disposal and take safety precautions once home to avoid fire hazards.

5. Dust Environment #

• The finishing area is not guaranteed to be dust-free. If you are concerned about contaminants affecting your finish, it is recommended to do finishing work at home.

6. Storage of Finishing Materials #

• All finishing materials should be taken home after use. Absolutely no chemicals can be stored in storage bins.  Periodic inspections will be made and chemicals removed.

• Fire Cabinet: The fire cabinet for shop owned chemicals only and not to be used by members

7. Drying Projects #

• Projects that are drying can be left in the finishing space for up to 24 hours. After this period, please remove your projects to make space for others.

By following these rules, we can ensure a safe and productive environment for all members of The Joinery. Thank you for your cooperation!

8.  Example Video #

Please watch the following video to understand the impact of leaving materials unattended.
