Why Use a Router Table?
First off, let’s talk about why you’d choose a router table over a handheld router. A router table gives you a higher degree of control, especially for detailed or repetitive cuts. With the router securely mounted, you move the wood across the table, allowing for consistent depth, accuracy, and safety.
Safe Practices with Your Router Table
Safety comes first, always. Here are some critical steps to follow:
- Inspect Your Router Table: Make sure the router table, fence, and insert plate are clean and secure before starting.
- Wear Proper Safety Gear: Always wear safety glasses and hearing protection. Dust masks are recommended due to the significant amount of sawdust generated.
- Check the Bit Condition: Ensure your router bit is sharp, clean, and free of damage.
- Use Push Sticks or Blocks: Keep your fingers safely away from the cutting area by using push sticks, push blocks, or feather boards.
At The Joinery, we emphasize the “2-3-12 rule”—this means you should always know your two control surfaces: the fence and the router table surface itself. Keep your fingers at least 3 inches away from the guards, and if your board is under 12 inches, pause and consider if the router table is the right tool for the job.
Understanding Collet and Nut Usage
One area that’s often overlooked is the proper handling of the collet and nut. The collet is what securely holds the bit in place, and correct use is critical for safety and precision.
Here’s the proper sequence for installing a router bit:
- Inspect the Collet: Before inserting the bit, ensure the collet is clean and free of debris. Never store the collet inside the nut—it can compress and deform, losing its effectiveness.
- Insert the Collet: Place the collet into the nut and ensure that it clicks securely into place. Then, set the nut and collet assembly into the router shaft.
- Install the Bit: Insert your router bit into the collet. Avoid bottoming out the bit in the collet—leave about 1/8″ gap to prevent vibration and possible loosening.
- Tighten Securely: Use wrenches to securely tighten the nut, but don’t overtighten. Firm pressure is sufficient.
Proper Router Table Use
When you’re ready to cut, set the fence accurately and double-check your measurement. Remember:
- Feed Direction Matters: Always move your stock from right to left against the rotation of the bit. This prevents kickback and ensures cleaner cuts.
- Make Incremental Passes: For deeper cuts, don’t do it all in one pass. Gradual, incremental passes ensure smoother results and reduce stress on the router and bit.
Clean-Up and Storage
When you’re finished, always unplug the router before making any adjustments or cleaning. Remove the router bit, collet, and nut carefully. Store them separately and securely to maintain their condition and longevity.
