Shop Etiquette at The Joinery: Creating a Welcoming Community
At The Joinery, we pride ourselves on fostering a welcoming environment for all woodworkers, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out. Over the years, I’ve learned that while I encourage new members to treat the shop as their own, not everyone interprets that the same way. To ensure everyone feels comfortable and respected, I now tell newcomers to think of The Joinery as if they’re visiting a friend’s workshop.
We have an amazing community here, filled with members who are eager to lend a hand and share their knowledge. However, we sometimes take our resources for granted or may not fully understand the best practices for using them. To enhance everyone’s experience and keep our costs low, I’d like to share some essential shop etiquette guidelines.
1. Join the Community
Relax! You’re in a fantastic place surrounded by friends. Take the time to introduce yourself to fellow members and engage in conversation. However, be mindful of others’ time—sometimes folks are focused on completing a project and may not be available for a chat. Join our online Discord server to ask for help, share your experiences, or start discussions about tools and techniques.
2. Feel Comfortable
Stress and fatigue can hinder your woodworking experience. Make The Joinery a sanctuary where you leave outside worries at the door. If you feel tired, take a break! Enjoy some free snacks in the lounge or catch an episode of The New Yankee Workshop on YouTube. Dress comfortably and adapt to the shop’s climate; while we do our best to maintain a pleasant environment, it may not always match your home comfort level.
3. Know Your Tools
Before using any tool, familiarize yourself with it. Each tool features a Blue QR code that links to valuable information. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance or revisit the orientation videos if needed. Pay attention to how tools sound and feel; if something seems off, stop and investigate. If you’re struggling with a tool, reevaluate your approach and seek help from others.
4. Always Use Dust Collection
Dust collection is vital for maintaining a clean and safe workspace. Most tools are equipped with dust collection systems—make sure to start them before cutting and allow time for them to ramp up. Clean the filters before each use, and empty the dust collector after your session whenever possible. A clean machine enhances everyone’s experience.
5. Use Supplies Wisely
The Joinery provides essential supplies like glue and sandpaper for small projects, but please use them judiciously. Treat these resources as if you’re purchasing them yourself. If you can reuse sandpaper, save it for your next project. Remember, a little glue goes a long way—use a brush or roller for even coverage and minimize drips.
6. Be Frugal with Space
As our community grows, space becomes more valuable. Each member has a designated bin for supplies and projects—please keep your area organized and ensure everything fits within your assigned space. If a project requires more room, ask where it’s safe to leave it. Label any glue-ups with your name and the start time to help others manage their workspace.
7. Clean Up After Yourself
At the end of your work session, please take time to clean up. Use the vacuum to tidy up tools and work surfaces, ensure dust collectors are emptied, and sweep the floor. There’s nothing more inviting than a clean shop ready for the next person to enjoy.
8. Chip In and Help Out
The Joinery thrives on community spirit. We’re committed to maintaining affordable rates and high-quality amenities, but we need your help to make it happen. If you have skills in machine maintenance, cleaning, teaching, or organizing member meetups, your contributions are invaluable.
By following these guidelines, we can all ensure that The Joinery remains a welcoming and enjoyable place for everyone. Let’s work together to create an environment where creativity flourishes and friendships grow. Happy woodworking!
