The “NEW” Joinery Expectations

Welcome to the New Shop!

Hey everybody, it’s Steven, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to our newly set-up shop! It’s great to see everything coming together so well. As we dive back into our projects, I want to share some expectations – both yours and mine – to keep this place running smoothly and efficiently.  Read the post below or check out the video!

Cleanliness is Key

First and foremost, when you enter the facility, expect it to be clean and ready. The tools should be in working order, and everything should be set for you to jump right into your projects. However, maintaining this state requires some contributions from everyone.

Keeping the Tools in Top Shape

I’m still managing most of the shop upkeep by myself, with occasional help. Therefore, I rely heavily on you, the members, to help keep this place in top-notch condition. Here’s how you can contribute:

Tool Maintenance

After using a tool, take some time to clean it. Wipe down the surfaces, sweep around the area, and check the dust collection system. If it’s getting two-thirds full, dispose of it in the appropriate dumpster.

Trash Disposal

Ensure the trash cans are not overflowing. If your project generates a lot of waste, kindly take it out to the dedicated dumpsters – one for recycling and one for trash. Currently, sawdust and wood scraps go into the trash, but I’m hopeful we can recycle these materials soon.

Organizing Your Projects

Our new shop offers plenty of space, but this also means a greater temptation to leave unfinished projects lying around. We’ve designated specific areas for storing works in progress:

Back Corner Shelves: Store your small projects on the extra shelves located here. Ideally, these should fit into your bins, but if not, this space is available.
Second Level Storage: Use the ladder to place larger projects on the upper level. Although I prefer glue-ups to be moved out of the way, remember to note the start time so others know when they can move or use the clamps.

Using Personal Tools

If you bring your own tools, store them in your designated cubbies. Additionally, we offer mini studios for rent, providing space for you to work and store your tools. Talk to me if you’re interested in renting one.

Tool Knowledge and Safety

Knowing how to use the tools properly is crucial. We’ve had several instances of tool damage due to improper use. To help with this:

Blue QR Codes: Scan these with your phone to access the user manual, my tips, videos, and safety information for each tool.

Red QR Codes: Use these to report a damaged or malfunctioning tool directly to me via email. Provide a brief description of the issue so I can address it promptly.

Safety First: If a tool is making a strange noise, stop using it immediately. Put up a sign and contact me via Discord or email.

Maintaining Dust Collection

Almost every tool now has dust collection, and it’s essential to use it every time you operate a tool. This keeps the shop clean and reduces the risk of dust clogging and tool damage. Whether it’s a shop vac or the main machines, always ensure dust collection is active.

Upcoming Features and Classes

Exciting updates are on the horizon! Expect new tools, a finishing space, and certification courses for the CNC router and laser. We’re also planning numerous classes for the fall, now possible without disturbing those working in the shop, thanks to our new classroom.

Final Thoughts

As of July 20th, our setup is complete, and everything is up and running. I urge you to take pride in this space, understand the tools, clean up after yourself, and use dust collection. Connect with fellow members on Discord, make suggestions, and most importantly, enjoy your time here.
