Why You Should Use the Crosscut Sled
At The Joinery, we strive to equip our community with the best tools and practices to create safe, accurate, and satisfying woodworking experiences. Our newest addition, the crosscut sled, is a significant upgrade, replacing the sliding table on the SawStop. Designed specifically for 90-degree crosscuts, this sled delivers unmatched precision for square cuts.
What Is a Crosscut Sled?
A crosscut sled is a sliding jig that rides in the miter slots of a table saw. It holds your workpiece steady and square as you make a cut, eliminating many of the challenges that come with using a standard miter gauge or freehand crosscutting. It’s especially handy for trimming stock to consistent lengths and making furniture-quality joints.
Why We Use It (and Only for 90° Cuts)
At The Joinery, our crosscut sled is dedicated solely to 90-degree cuts. This means it’s been carefully calibrated to deliver square cuts every time, making it ideal for frame parts, casework components, and any project that demands precision.
We ask all members to only use this sled for 90° crosscuts—no miters, bevels, or angled trims. For those cuts, our second table saw can be set up with other jigs and miter gauges that can handle the variety. If the response to this first sled is positive, we plan to build additional versions tailored for miter joints and angled cuts, expanding the precision cutting options available to our members.
How to Use It Correctly
To maintain accuracy and ensure the sled lasts for everyone:
- Push with both hands evenly on either side of the fence. This balanced pressure keeps the sled gliding smoothly and minimizes wear on the runners.
- Don’t force it. Let the sled do the work and keep your cut line steady and safe.
- Leave the sled in place. The crosscut sled is designed to remain on the SawStop at all times to preserve its alignment and ensure consistent accuracy. Please do not remove or reposition it.
Shared Responsibility for Shared Tools
Our sled is a community tool, and its precision depends on collective care. If treated with respect—used only for square cuts, handled gently, and stored properly—it will provide years of reliable service for all members.
We’re proud of the thoughtful systems in our shop, and the crosscut sled is a great example of how a simple, well-used tool can elevate everyone’s craft. This particular sled was designed and built by Bill Florac using our AVID CNC Router, showcasing the talent and technology within our community.
