Shop Tips

Two small things in this one, and both of them are really about the person who walks in after you.

First, the monitor by the door. It is not decoration. Shop updates go up there — a machine that is down, a change to the hours, a class taking over part of the floor for the evening. It is the fastest way to tell everyone something at once, and reading it costs you about four seconds. Do it on the way in, before you set up, rather than after you have already hauled your stock over to a machine that is out of service.

Second, sawdust. Dust collection is not an optional step here: start the collector before you cut and give it a second to come up to speed, check the filter before you use a machine, and empty the collector when you are done. Then at the end of your session, vacuum the tool and your work surface and sweep the floor. None of that is dramatic, and none of it takes long.

Neither habit is hard. Together they are most of the difference between walking into a shop that is ready to work in and spending your first twenty minutes cleaning up after somebody else’s good time.
