📍 📍 📍 One of the things I’ve noticed when I’ve come into the shop on Saturdays is that oftentimes the dust collection of the table saws or maybe the joiner or the planer are not actually moving any air. And the reason for that is actually really, really simple.

The Importance of Regular Filter Cleaning

These pleated filters need to be cleaned on a regular basis and that’s What these wipers are for.

There’s a little wiper inside here that ruffles the filter inside and knocks all the fine particles down and into the bag. And if that doesn’t happen, then what happens is those fine particles are forced up through the filter and into the pleats, and then it won’t let air pass. And so the end result is there’s not enough airflow.

How to Clean the Filters

So, the one thing we want to make sure of is that on a regular basis, come in and just keep moving these flappers around. And they don’t have to go all the way around in circles, they can go back and forth, back and forth, and then maybe hit on it.

And just knock all that dust down. Do a couple more.

The Impact of Proper Dust Collection on Tool Performance

And then what you should find is when you turn the dust collector on the next time, you’ll see a lot more air flow and it’ll also Uh, impact your cuts better because it is going to clear the blade and it’s going to cool the blade a little bit. So always, always, always take some time and clean this before you start up.

The other thing is, always please, if a tool is connected to dust collection, please use it. Even if you’re just making one simple cut.

The Consequences of Neglecting Dust Collection

What happens on a lot of these tools is as their dust collection has gotten better, their ports have gotten smaller. They can direct air directly where they want it and it makes it smaller.

But when you make a cut, And the sawdust just sits in that little dust port, and then it starts to clog up. And what happens is over time, everybody that’s making just one cut and not cleaning it, it just keeps filling up and filling up. And then when we come in on a Saturday and inspect the tools, they’re full and nothing’s, nothing’s flowing through here.

The Importance of Using Dust Collection Even for Single Cuts

So please always, if a tool is connected to dust collection, always, always, always turn on the dust collector before you use the cut. You’ll have great success. We’ll have a fun time.
