Introducing The Joiner’s Bench Podcast: Stories, Skills, and Community from the Heart of the Shop

Hey friends,

After years of dreaming, a little bit of hesitation, and a final nudge from a blank piece of paper (thank you, ChatGPT), I’m proud to introduce the very first episode of The Joiner’s Bench, a new biweekly podcast from The Joinery.

This is more than just another woodworking podcast. It’s a conversation — between me, you, and the community we’re all building together. Whether you’re a seasoned woodworker, a weekend DIYer, or someone just curious about how to get started, this podcast is for you.

🎙️ Episode 1: Measure Once, Start Anyway

In this kickoff episode, I get honest about the fear that holds so many of us back — not knowing enough, not having the right tools, or not wanting to waste expensive wood. We’ve all been there. I tell some stories from my early days, talk about how iteration and simple materials changed everything, and how this whole podcast is itself a prototype.

We also introduce our regular segments:
• Bench Notes: What’s new at The Joinery? This week we talk about our bandsaw box class, new tools in the shop, and upcoming opportunities.
• The Craft: Short tips, reflections, and encouragement to help you get out of your head and into the shop. This week: why making a prototype is the perfect first step.
• Maker’s Moment: A personal story that ties it all together — in this episode, I share how I finally hit “record” after years of hesitating to start a podcast.
• Ask the Maker: Listener questions! I tackle one of the most common questions I get: What’s the first tool I should buy if I want to get into woodworking?

Why a Podcast?

I’ve taught hundreds of students through our Introduction to Woodworking class and guided many more through project builds at The Joinery. But I’ve always wanted a way to reach folks outside of class, to talk shop in a more personal, ongoing way. This podcast lets me bring a little piece of The Joinery to you — wherever you are.

And here’s the thing: this isn’t a one-way street. I’d love for you to be a part of shaping it. Got questions? Want to hear about a specific tool, technique, or challenge? Let me know. This is your bench too.
